Nandikesa maha bhaga, Shiva dhyana parayana,
Gowri sankara sevartham anugnam dathumarhasi
{nandi stotra}

(Oh Lord Nandi who is the Lord of all bulls, who is immersed in prayer of Shiva. Please give me permission to worship Lord Sankara with his consort Gowri)

Nandi, the majestic bull who guards Kailasa Parbat where Lord Shiva resides, is also the protector of VR Chennai. The sculpture is a replica of the idol at the Shiva temple in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the ancient Chola capital near Thanjavur. Weighing over 350 kg, the installation stands 3m (10 ft) tall and is painted an auspicious vermillion, speckled in gold.

The name evolved from the Tamil root word Nandhu (to grow, to flourish), Nandi has a prominent place in Indian and also in Tamil mythology. The Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, written by Saint Paranjothi Munivar during the Pallava Era, tells a story where Nandi is reincarnated in the form of a whale to help Lord Shiva reunite with Parvati. One of the more famous Puranic tales describes Nandi's conflict with Ravan, leading him to curse the latter saying that his Kingdom would be burned down by a monkey. This comes true when Hanuman burns down avan's Kingdom of Lanka in the Ramayan.
