Glass Bells

Crafted by: Klove Studio
Material: Glass
Location: Kannadi Gopuram: South

The concept of bells has been given a unique twist in the foyer of Kannadi Gopuram, with its multi-tiered arrangement of hand-blown glass baubles of different shapes and designs. This marvellous piece cascades over 7m (22 ft). Tinged in blue and green, it also complements the Samudra Manthan mural that envelopes this work of art.

It is said that 13 Ratnas or "Divine Gems" came out of the divine tug-of-war, including Soma (the moon) and Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, Fortune and Prosperity. The installation has a central array of gold bells which honour Goddess Lakshmi who came into being through the Samudra Manthan. These are surrounded by bells tinged in blue and green which are symbolic of the energy in flowing water.
