The Western Chalukya Empire spread over vast parts of northern Tamilakam and Karnataka. During the height of their powers under King Vikramaditya VI, the Western Chalukyas ruled over a large portion of the Deccan plateau between the Narmada River to the North and the Kaveri to the South. During this period, they were able to compete with the Cholas in being the dominant power of the region.

There was a strict adherence to the caste system and traditional beliefs during the Western Chalukya rule, with Brahmins enjoying a conspicuously privileged position in society. Other religions like Jainism and Buddhism were also prevalent.

There was substantial literary activity as well during this period, mostly in Kannada and Sanskrit. The most prominent Kannada scholar of the era was Ranna, who was patronised by King Tailapa II (the founder of the Western Chalukya Empire) and his successor Satyashraya. Ranna is considered one of the three literary 'jewels' of Kannada literature.
