Ulòka Gopuram

Crafted by: Sri Sankara Silpa Sala
Material: Granite
Location: East

The Ulòka Gopuram gets its name from the magnificent Metal Bell, inscribed with the Dasavataram, that hangs from its foyer.

The carvings on the Gopuram are inspired by the golden period of the dynasties of the southern peninsula, a period spanning over a thousand years. These great empires, from the Pallava Dynasty of the Pre-Sangam period to the Vijayanagara Empire that preceded Colonial rule, have played a key role in shaping the art, culture and beliefs of the region. Illustrated in detail are key achievements and architectural triumphs as well as coins and seals of the various kingdoms.

To know more about the history and achievements of these great dynasties, take the Kathai, Kalai, Parampariyam: History Walk.

East Gate

On the walls of the East Gate are illustrated maps detailing the amplitude of key southern dynasties at the peak of their power, across various time periods. Each map is a beautiful design, mixing art with cartography to reveal the history of the lands that were ruled by each Dynasty.

Chola Map
The heartland of the Cholas was the fertile
valley of the Kaveri River. At the height of their
powers, they ruled most of South India.

Chera Map
The Cheras were the ruling Dynasty of the
present-day state of Kerala and, to a lesser extent,
parts of Tamil Nadu in South India.

Pandya Map
The Early Pandyas ruled parts of Southern
India from at least 4th Century BCE. They initially
ruled their Empire from Korkai, a seaport
on the southern-most tip of the Indian Peninsula.

Pallava Map
The Pallavas became a major power during
the reign of Mahendravarman I (571 – 630 CE) and
Narasimhavarman I (630 – 668 CE). Their Empire
dominated Tamilakam for about 600 years.
