Gopurams are ornate gatehouse towers that symbolise the entry to an urban complex. These complexes were often designed as concentric enclosures with the main shrine at their heart. Ceremonial routes led to the temple through a series of gopurams, in varying sizes, always aligned to the cardinal directions. The Gopurams at VR Chennai are an homage to these monumental features that are scattered around the region as marks of the ancient wisdom of the master builders.
