Maram Gopuram

Crafted by: Sri Sankara Silpa Sala
Material: Granite
Location: West

The construction of elaborate gopurams as tribute to the divine was considered an honour by the kings of Southern India. Unadorned and understated in its simplicity, this Gopuram is an ode to the effort of the great kings and their unfinished, unsung feats.

Many of the most captivating gopurams are those that could not be completed due to various reasons. The Raya Gopuram in the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai which, if it were complete, would have been one of the tallest of its kind in South India, is one such example.

Mandala

In Indian tradition, time and space are considered cyclic, with neither a beginning nor an end. One rotation of the great wheel of time is divided into four ages (yugs): Satya Yug, Treta Yug, Dwapara Yug and Kali Yug. It is believed that Lord Vishnu ("the preserver") through his various avatars keeps this cycle moving.

The Mandala ("circle" in Sanskrit) is a symbolic representation of 'wholeness' and the connections between the body, the mind and the cosmos. It also serves as a spiritual tool that can be used for Dhyan (meditation), helping an individual attain a higher state of being. A Mandala can have a number of different compositions and symbols, depending on its function. However, it is always symmetrical, symbolising the cosmic balance.

The Mandala motif can be seen in various sizes, forms and colours in the Centre. The motif balances visual elements, symbolising unity and harmony.
