The Kaliman Gopuram is named after the 1000 handcrafted Terracotta Bells that hang from the foyer.

Etched on the Gopuram are key events from the colonial past of Chennai – from the arrival of the British in 1639, when Francis Day secured a grant from the local Nayak rulers to establish a settlement, till Independence in 1947. Also featured is a timeline of the city – tracing key events ranging from 250,000 BCE till the present.
